A divorce certificate or court decision is needed for remarriage at Standesamt, changing marital status, or family reunification visa applications.

When do you need a divorce certificate translation?

Remarriage (Standesamt)

To register a new marriage at the German Standesamt, the dissolution of the previous marriage must be documented with a translated divorce certificate or court decision.

Single-parent benefits

When applying to Jobcenter, Familienkasse for Unterhaltsvorschuss, or the single-parent tax relief, a translated divorce document is required.

Child custody issues

To establish or modify custody through Jugendamt or Familiengericht, a translation of the court's divorce ruling containing the provisions on children is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Certificate or court decision — which is better?
Depends on the authority. Standesamt usually accepts the certificate but may request the court decision.
Do I need an apostille?
For German authorities, a certified translation is usually sufficient.
How much does court decision translation cost?
From 45 EUR for the certificate. Court decision from 60 EUR depending on volume.
Is confidentiality guaranteed?
Absolutely. All documents are handled confidentially.
What is the difference between translating a ZAGS certificate and a court decision?
A divorce certificate from the Ukrainian civil registry (ZAGS) is a short one-page document that merely confirms the fact of divorce. A court decision is a full 3-10 page document with legal reasoning, details on property division and children. The German Standesamt is usually satisfied with the certificate, but for complex cases (remarriage after a divorce in Ukraine, custody disputes) German authorities may specifically require the court decision.
